A magnificent original oil painting by German landscape painter Edward Harrison Compton (1881-1960). A rushing waterfall of spring mountain melt crashes along verdant pines and green moss, a low fog barely conceals the sharp Alpine peak off in the distance. Compton was a master of recreating the mountains of southern Bavaria at it's purest. Compton was born in Feldafing in Upper Bavaria, Germany, and received his early training from his father Edward Theodore Compton. He continued his study in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, after which he settled back in Bavaria. He frequently painted landscapes in Germany, England, northern Italy, and Sicily. Fine quality painting by the important 19th century artist from Belguim. Leon Herbo is well represented in museums around the world including the United States. Born in 1850, Herbo studied at the Academies of Tournai (at L. Legendre) and Brussels (1869-1874). He specialized in genre scenes and portraits, but also painted numerous orientalist and biblical scenes. In 1889 he painted in collaboration with the painter Alexandre Clarys monumental canvas "Meeting between the Maria Hendrika Squadron, Queen Maria Hendrika and Princess Clementina", which resides in the Military Museum in Brussels, Belgium. Herbo was co-founder of the artists' association "L'Essor" in Brussels (founded in 1876), along with the artists Louis Cambier, Henri Permeke, Louis Pion and Franz Seghers. He died in 1907. Crisp, bright sunlight illuminates this quiet alley of a Provincial European village as long dark shadows give some relief from the heat in this wonderful painting by Fernand Vetcour. A simple church rises into a cloudless sky and lush green trees soak up the sun's rays. Fernand Vetcour was a Belgian painter born in 1908 in the town of Liege. There he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, where he later became a professor. Works in museums in Doornik, Brussels, Ghent, Liege and Verviers. He died in 2001. Dark grey clouds float over the reddish roofs while small patches of snow remain in corners where the spring sun has yet to warm. Modorov was born in Msytora, a town famous for its icon painters. His uncle was the famous artist Fyodor Modorov, and must have been a great influence in young Nikolai's life. After graduating from Leningrad’s Vera Mukhina Higher School of Art and Industry, Modorov established himself as a painter of small towns and villages around Mystora and Vladimir. Cows can bee seen in the distance grazing on lush green grass, an idyllic Dutch or Flemish country scene. Evert Moll was born in the town Voorburg, near The Hague in 1878. He lived and worked there until 1930 but also painted in London, Paris, Rotterdam during this time. After 1930 he relocated to a studio in The Hague, where he remained until his death in 1955. A member of the acclaimed Pulchri Studio, he was a self-taught painter but was friends with and influenced by Willem Maris. The view is framed by high mountain trees, their lush green starting to turn the colors of the approaching fall. A fascinating painting of everyday objects masterfully executed by Tjerk Wielinga. A kaleidoscope of both color and light are represented in this work: shiny pewter is off-set by the dark folds of the fabric as much as the bright fresh yellow of the lemons contrast with the dried leaves and flowers. Wielinga was born in the town of Sneek, The Netherlands in 1885. The son of wealthy shop owners, he initially painted in his free time. By as time went by and his talent in painting grew, he decided to establish himself as a full time artist. He relocated to the city of Hilversum on January 1st, 1939 where he would be able to reach a wider audience for his work . This painting is dated the 23rd of January of that year, an early example of his new start in his chosen career. He died in 1957. Source: Scheen, RKD. Dark green water reflects the towering buildings of the Brewer's Canal (Brouwersgracht), by many considered the prettiest street in Amsterdam. A number of boats are tied up, floating under the trees that line the canal. Louis Andries Pieter Rempt was born in Amsterdam in 1896, but traveled to Rotterdam to study at the Academy of Fine Art there.
