‘Swiss Alps’ by Jean Philippe George-Julliard
A very idyllic scene of cattle crossing a rushing river by well listed Swiss artist Jean Philippe George-Julliard. Signed lower left and framed in a magnificent period frame. Canvas image is 13 1/2 inches by 17 1/2 inches. Overall dimensions are 20 3/4 inches by 24 3/4 inches. Jean-Philippe George-Julliard was born in Geneva in 1818 of French parents. He studied in Nantes under F. Donné and later in Geneva under A. Calame, with whom he traveled, and later collaborated with on some major compositions. He was a founder member of the Geneva Artists’ Circle and of the ‘Brunswick.’ He exhibited at Geneva between 1845 and 1886 and mainly produced views of the Alps, Savoy, and Bern. He became very ill in 1877 but continued to work until his death in 1888. Reference: Benezit.
